WBBM Chicago Finally Gets Props

[ad#square336x280]

WBBM

The hottest radio station in Chicago never plays any music. It boasts no wacky disc jockeys, no larger-than-life personalities, and no incendiary talk show hosts. It generally steers clear of hype, controversy or drama. In fact, it’s been churning out the same type of programming day in and day out — delivered by some of the same voices — for more than 40 years.

A Piece of Radio History: WJJD Chicago 1980-85

[ad#square336x280]

A sign-off from 1980 followed by a 15 minute aircheck from December 27, 1985 starting at 8:06 p.m. Eastern Time. Received in Philadelphia. I can remember listening to this same sign-off at 10 p.m. in July 1980 from Philadelphia and then waiting for KSL Salt Lake City, Utah to come in. The Wikipedia article for WJJD (WYLL) is wrong when it states that it was 1980 when WJJD stopped signing off an hour after sunset and began broadcasting 24 hours. I have a QSL card from KSL dated July 17, 1981 where I heard them at 2 a.m. This would not be possible if WJJD was broadcasting 24 hours. This was a Friday morning and very unlikely that WJJD was off the air for maintenance. An article in the April 12, 1982 Chicago Tribune informs us that, a week earlier, the FCC gave WJJD the privilege to broadcast 24-hours a day. A March 8, 1982 article in the Chicago Tribune said that WJJD switched formats from country to big-band on February 27, 1982
